585 BC: The first known prediction of a solar eclipse was made in Greece. When it didn’t happen, the date was moved to October 21.

1895: Irish writer and poet Oscar Wilde was sentenced to two years hard labor for being a sodomite. The bottomline is… it was that day’s top story.
1927: Robert Ludlum was bourne.
2001: American Erik Weihenmayer, 32, became the first blind climber to reach the summit of Mount Everest. The view from the top didn’t impress him.
