A WHOLE NEW WORLD

FIFTEEN YEARS after he and six others were imprisoned for the massacre of three Vizconde family members, Hubert Jeffrey Webb, son of former Senator Freddie Webb was acquitted by the Supreme Court Tuesday, December 14. Shortly after his release, one joke that circulated online said Hubert was astonished to learn that 15 years later, Mara Clara is still being shown on TV.

But wait, there’s more. Here goes…

Hubert Webb’s Top 10 Reactions/Questions After He Got Home Following His Release From the New Bilibid Prisons

No. 10: “Whaaaaaaat? Single pa rin si Kris?!”

No. 9: “Does Kabayan ever get tired? He’s been doing TV Patrol for like… forever!”

No. 8: “Can you turn the radio on to Campus Radio please? I wonder what’s the new No. 1 song on Triggerman’s Top 20 at 12.”

No. 7: “Thoss, Peek, Pennisi, Seigle, Norwood, Weinstein, Hatfield, Carey, Dillinger. Geez! Dad, did the PBA change its name to Fil-Am Basketball of the Philippines?”

No. 6: “Sandali! Hindi kita maintindihan Joshua. Again, what’s LOL, LMAO, STFU, BRB and GTG?”

No. 5: “Mom, bakit nakatayo ang mga newscasters?”

No. 4: “Wait lang! You mean, ‘yong interview sa ‘kin kanina ni Ms Mel Tiangco was aired not on ABS-CBN but on GMA 7?

No. 3: “I always hear the name P.Noy? What’s that Pinky? A new cartoon strip like A. Lipin of the Inquirer?”

No. 2: “I don’t get it Jason. Are they insulting me or are they just pulling my leg. Do I really look fashionable? Kasi people keep saying things like, I am a hot trending topic daw. Trend? Jesus, I’ve only sported an orange shirt for the last 15 years. What trend?”

And Hubert Webb’s No. 1 reaction/question when he got home following his release from prison…

“I can’t believe this Fritz! Did Ernie Baron undergo plastic surgery? Seriously! And why the use of a screen name?!? “Kuya Kim?!?” Funny bro!! Ha-ha-ha!

  1. laugh it out loud, mga bro, mga mre and pre! before “a whole new world”, couldn’t think of any part of my funny bone to tickle becoz of the seriousness of events unfolded. but ph still managed to tickle me pink. whew! di ko maapuhap (as in kinda grasp) ang akmang reaksyon; should i weep or should i smile? should i cheer or should i cry? would somebody help me sigh! kayo na lang maglagay ng tono! ay totoo pala yung mixed emotions! i thought it happens only in write-ups and fiction! Tinuldukan na ng Supreme Court ang kaso, as in period! What now Mang Lauro? Do i see ellipsis . . . ?

  2. Re Hubert Webb. Gusto kong matawa sa Top 10 mo pero hindi ko magawa as I don’t believe that that beast and his cohorts are not guilty at all. Just looking at your picture of Webb, nasusuka na ako. Ngising-aso.

now, let me define it very simply, he is one who is not pure

pinoy, me ganuon? one who is not half-breed, in other words,

not mestizo, unlike the rest of most of the azkals who are…

      1. Ayyyyy! I’ve got a first hand info about Jessica!

Bago siya lumabas bilang star margarine witness ng NBI, we live in the same compound, in a two level row of flats, hers being directly below mine, both end units.

May nangyaring di kanais-nais. I was on a provincial assignment for a few days and pagbalik ko, I was informed by the owner of the building na pinasok daw ang compound namin one night ng mga di kilalang kalalakihan looking for Jekjek (tawag namin kay Jesicca noon). Wala din daw ang Jessica that time. After a few days, bumalik daw ang Jek, na may mga escort pa daw at nagpaalam na sa may ari.

I then told the may ari na interesado akong lumipat dun sa unit ni Jek kasi nga katabi lang ng parking space ng aking caru. So, I helped the may ari to clean the room.

Ayyyyyy! Lost and found namin yung mga ginagamit daw yun sa pagsa-shabu!

After almost a decade, and the 20-year expiry, how far can we go to know the real perpetrators of the massacre?

    1. his grief was indeed heart-wrenching. after all these years he believed those guys did the tragic thing to his family, here he gets an acquittal for them from the highest court in the land.

what puzzles me though is that he strongly opposed the willing submission of Hubert’s sample for DNA testing back in ’97. The smears were still available for analysis that time. The lower court acceded to his request.

If I were guilty, why on earth will I demand a test on something that will only incriminate me further?

So many questions. But then the verdict is out. There’s nothing left for both of them now – Mang Lauro and the acquitted men – but to move on with their shattered lives.

  4. This post is the funniest thing ever, PH!

Seriously though, i find it hard to laugh with the acquittal of these former druggies. To me, they are guilty. I think the Webb family should also watch what they say in public… the dad wanting to see Alfaro in jail and the mom talking smack about Lauro Vizconde. Nakaka turn-off. Don’t think the world is rejoicing with what happened, their family is of course, so they should just keep it to themselves. They should be sensitive enough not to compare their grief to Lauro Vizconde’s grief. Big diff. Their family is now complete. And what about Lauro’s? Nakaka-awa si Mr. Vizconde. Kahit bali-baliktarin pa nila, what happened to his family is every family’s worst nightmare. Still gut-wrenching and heartbreaking after 15 years.

      1. Yes, I agree that Freddie Webb went overboard vwhen he said that Mr. Visconde should be happy over Hubert’s release. He said it before they fetched Hubert and I thought that he was insensitive and would later realize it. However, after they have fetched Hubert, he repeated same remark…and I was really shocked. Whether or not Hubert is guilty, the Webbs should be very careful with their words especially wrt Mr. Visconde’s feelings.

    1. The heavy feeling is inevitable, even uncontrollable. We grew up, nay, grew older, with that Vizconde case in our midst. I guess, and now we know, that we have laws and magistrates that hold the scales. But it’s doubly heartbreaking that it took 15 years and 2 courts to know that the prosecutors have started at the wrong foot pala all along. Woe to the long tedious years that these so-called law experts wasted without seeing the flaws that the SC did. At nauwi sa wala ang lahat?! Sabi nga ng kanta… where do we go from here…?

  5. Why are they naming people like gary v, albright, and previous officials of the FBI, supervisor of hubert’s, bicycle store owner’s statements???? They are comparing these people to the maids of the webbs, the security guards of BF Subd, and of course that of jessica alfaro, who they are now labeling as ex- NBI agent, a drug user, and a mistress of an NBI agent?? We are not even sure if Alfaro is still alive or have they wiped her out before they ask for this so-called re- arraignment?
One thing is obvious here. They are all doing these under Pnoy’s admin because they are all close to the Aquino’s and ABS. These are the fruits of their support to the Aquino’s and ABS. All those who supported are now being given their reward. To hell with abnoy’s promises to the poor, to hell with the previous admin’s accomplishment, to hell with those who are and were against abnoy. Nothing can stop this admin’s revengeful acts as long as they are in control of the nation…
Again and again, we, the common people are their sacrificial lambs….

  6. Re the suspects versus the vizcondes. They are just victims of mediocre police work and a seriously crippled justice system. I think there are still hundreds of people behind bars waiting for months, even years for their day in court. We know these exist but nothing is done.
Also i find media a bit insensitive in covering all the rejoicing going on amongst the supposed innocents while poor mr. Vizconde is left with no resolution.
Media used to have class back in the day… whatever happened to it?

  7. i was thinking while on my way to the office how PH would take “lightly” such a heavy ordeal (for both parties involved in the case). still, PH made me laugh. while my heart bleeds for both parties, i want to think that the blog is actually ‘just’ doing its job, just like when the Supreme Court acquitted Webb et al for failure of the prosecution to prove the crime beyond reasonable doubt.

    kudos, PH!

  8. Isipin nyo kaya for a minute kung kapatid nyo ang wrongfully accused at masentensyahan. It’s easy to judge until it happens to you.

If Webb, et. al. are indeed guilty, they paid for it already. Life is short, and 15 years is a lot to lose. Sa mga nakulangan, there’s always divine justice. Mas malupit ang gaba (karma).

  9. If it’s any consolation, after seriousness gets the better of laughs, here’s a healing read, lifted from a news bit on Inquirer today…

“The Supreme Court is not the last court,” Bishop Aniceto Arigo said in an interview over the Church-run Radio Veritas Wednesday. “We have what we call divine justice because … our capability as human beings is limited.” Arigo, chair of the Catholic Bishops’ Episcopal Commission on Prison and Pastoral Care, said that while the high court had found Webb et al. “legally innocent,” it had no way of determining their “moral guilt or innocence.”

He said that there was a distinction between legal and moral guilt, and that the former was examined and established by the courts through evidence.

“The Supreme Court is human, so it can only establish legal guilt. But moral guilt is beyond its competence,” Arigo said. He added: “It is only God who has a say on one’s moral guilt.

“Real justice will not come from a human court, only from God.”
Arigo also said one must understand that any court’s nature and concern were to establish a suspected offender’s guilt “beyond reasonable doubt” based on evidence presented.

The verdict favorable to Webb and company may have been an early Christmas gift to their families, but there is no way for anybody to “know the real issue or the guilt of the accused,” he said.

“On the part of the family of Lauro Vizconde, our advocacy for restorative justice will help in the healing process,” Arigo said.

“Restorative justice is not only the punishment of the guilty but also the restoration and the rehabilitation of the broken relationship between the offender and the offended,” the bishop said.

Quoting Brazil’s Archbishop Oscar Romero, Arigo also said there was a need to push for genuine reforms in the Philippine justice system because “human justice is like a snake: It only bites those without shoes.”

    1. I agree Ate Wan. And I do believe in KARMA, whether good or bad.

It is not us, ordinary people who can judge the guilt (or the lack of it) of the accused. We can talk about it for days, even weeks but that’s all we can do… just talk about it. Actually, that’s what we’ve been doing for the last 15 years or so.

I still would like to have faith in the Philippine justice system, with its flaws and all. You know why? Because that’s all we have as citizens of this country.

We can only hope and pray that our justice system will do its best to uphold what is rightful and just according to the law governing the 7,106 islands in the Far East, collectively known as the Republic of the Philippines.

      Ayyyy! ako ba ito?

When the radio station reformatted, my recourse is to listen to other radio stations such as Wave, Magic, and Home Radio.

Two weeks later, the shocking new came out that Webb & company were acquitted. Apparently, these two women knew what was to come. How come they were very confident during the interview that they will spend Christmas with Tony Boy? At first I thought they meant they will visit Tony boy in jail although I couldn’t imagine them spending more than a minute in Bilibid being well heeled and well manicured. So two weeks earlier, alam na nitong magkapatid na ito na maa-acquit iyong kapamilya nila. Poor Mang Lauro. God help you.
