MISCOMMUNICATION

Postscript to a Hostage Crisis
Presidential Communications and Operations Office Secretary Herminio Coloma on Thursday expressed doubt that Hong Kong Chief Executive Donald Tsang telephoned President Aquino at the height of the hostage crisis last Monday. But Presidential Communications Development and Strategic Planning Office Secretary Ricky Carandang confirmed that Chang did call the President. It turned out though that President Aquino’s aide did not inform him about the call because when he answered the phone and said, “Hello? How may I help you?,” Tsang’s aide replied, “May we talk to President Isko Moreno?”

Secretary Herminio Coloma expressed doubt that Hong Kong Chief Executive Donald Tsang called up President Aquino last Monday. But fellow Communications Group Secretary Ricky Carandang said Tsang did call the President. Malacañang has since vowed to fix the communication problem between Hong Kong and Manila… as soon as it has fixed the communication problem between Carandang and Coloma.

Secretary Herminio Coloma said former President Arroyo was also to blame for Monday’s bloody hostage crisis at Quirino Grandstand in Manila. But we’re not sure yet if that’s the official stand of Malacañang until we’ve heard from Secretary Ricky Carandang.

Reports say former President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo wrote two letters to the Chinese Prime Minister, and to the Hong Kong chief executive. One was to extend her condolences over the death of Hong Kong nationals in a hostage drama, and the other to defend herself from Herminio Coloma.

In Thursday’s Senate hearing, Manila Police District director on leave Chief Supt. Rodolfo Magtibay revealed that it was Manila Mayor Alfredo Lim who ordered the arrest of SPO2 Gregorio Mendoza, the hostage-taker’s brother. But Lim was quick to deny Magtibay’s claim. Malacañang believes though it was GMA who ordered it.

This just in! A recent survey showed that President Noynoy Aquino is now the most unpopular Philippine president ever… in Hong Kong.

Following Monday’s bungled rescue of hostages, President Aquino has been at the receiving end of slanderous and defamatory Facebook posts, comments, insults, and swear words. The President says it feels like the campaign season once again.

President Aquino has been repeatedly bashed, insulted, lambasted, mocked, and berated by Hong Kong Chinese nationals and fellow Filipinos as well on his Facebook Like Page. The President admits he has never experienced such “below the belt attacks” – since Manny Villar conceded the presidential race.

Last Wednesday, President Aquino started to ban slanderous and defamatory posts, comments, insults, and swear words from his Facebook Like Page – the same thing that his sister Kris has been doing 24/7 since she joined the site.

      1. To sino nanay mo,
I don’t think anon was objecting to this particular post, the fact that heckling nga, expected na parodies ay marami. Maybe anon was simply saying na nahihirapan pa siyang tumawa kasi fresh pa sa mind niya ang tragic event because of the visuals we’ve seen on tv live. Ang kasabihan nga, people have different levels of tolerance for pain…so let’s not put words into other people’s mouth, okay? GOD Bless and have a fine Sunday!

        To Mr. PH,
Hope you’re feeling better. Take some rest over the long weekend. GOD Bless and have a fine Sunday!

  2. Do you wonder why no police died during the hostage drama(except of course, the hostage taker), despite the hostage taker’s superior position? According to a MPD police I talked to, the hostage taker did not want to kill a fellow policeman. Just come to think of it. he knows the position of the attackers, he can readily position himself to shot the police. And according the police I talked to, they can manage the situation, as in negotiatiate further, but due to the pressure exerted by some POLITICIANS and MEDIA, they attacked without a proper tactic, as well as equipment. Isipin mo na lang, pulis ka, alam mong delikado ang pumasok sa mga ganung sitwasyon, di ka magdadala ng gamit pamproteksyon sa sarili mo?

It should be the media who should answer as to why nagalit si mendoza! Kasalanan nila!

    1. Our apprehension in the resignation of a corrupt president in the previous administration was her replacement of an intellectually-challenged vice president. In the present administration, our apprehension is the replacement of an intellectually challenged and incompetent president with a very corrupt and power hungry vice president.

    1. Well, the Chinese can’t be blamed for objecting to the flag over Mendoza’s coffin. I’m sure even majority of us Filipinos don’t agree to that. Wrt future meddling by the Chinese gov’t on different issue/s, that’s another thing though. We can and should stand up for our rights. It is just sad that nagsunud-sunod ang not so good news of our countrymen in HK. First is the Ronald Singson incident at their airport mismo, then this hostage-taking incident in Manila last Monday followed by the replacement of Magtibay by a certain Villaroya who according to news also have cases filed against him, one involving an issue with a Chinese national. Whether true or not, if the latter is still under investigation, the prudent thing to do is to recall the appointment of Villaroya. Para kasing adding salt to the wound e.

Masakit man sa ears because we never seem to learn…let’s hope and pray that we pick up the pieces from the shameful incident and that both the local and national authorities AND the media take respective responsibilities to address the issue of what to do – PROPER WAY- so that a similar incident won’t happen again…that is that a similar incident will not end up in a tragic and gruesome way. No more fingerpointing please, umamin na lang ng kanya-kanyang pagkukulang at pagkakamali and do something concrete to address the problem/s.

    1. Mr. PH,

When Noynoy called Mr. Tsang to deliver his I am sorry speech, he cited as reason for failing to answer the latter’s call the fact that he was busy monitoring and taking control of the situation. Now if this was true, he was then in command, so if we apply the principle of command responsibility, it is just but proper that before he fire anyone, he should fire himself first.

In short, the buck should not stop at Secretary Robredo.

A lot of Pinoys complain about racists attacks against us, but before we can “complain” about racism towards us, we have to make sure we, ourselves don’t make discriminatory remarks about non-Filipinos. Just my piece.

  15. re your poll, sec. Jesse robredo, IMHO, is one of the few, if not the only member of the president’s cabinet that i really believe in. He was a very good local leader. But more than blaming the police, i really believe it was the media coverage that bungled the whole thing. Nakakalungkot considering that these media personalities, i am certain, were once idealistic people who would uphold ethical standards in their coverage. But because the media are ultimately business entities, in the end, yung business interests pa rin ang mananalo. Let’s hope they have already learned their lesson even if the hard way.

  17. there is a classic management book – the peter principle – which states that everyone is ultimately promoted to their level of incompetence.

we are seeing that very clearly, and on an alarming scale, within the current administration. local success does not guarentee ability at a national level, and national experience does not always translate to the international stage.

and i am seeing a worrying management style which i shall call ‘p-noy’s practices’

    * only be open and transparent when things are going well, or if i am bashing the arroyo administration

    * only be accessible when it is prepared and planned. all other time is ‘private time’

    * don’t answer questions about shalani – or why julia wears such short skirts

    * don’t answer questions on the big issues – freedom of information, reproductive health, divorce reform, hacienda lusita, vfa, economic policy, charter change, climate change, human rights – child trafficking, massacres, extra judicial killings, pnp torture, student hazing, drug trafficking – whew who persuaded me to take this job – sack them

    * talk tough – but only fire the little guys. dont take on the big boys

    * keep smiling – don’t let people see how worried and anxious i am. ( note to self – don;t grin when crisis or tragedy)

    * if all else fails get my sisters to run the show( kris thinks she does anyway)

    * dont upset the chinese – they own our businesses and most of our politicians

    * remember pork barrel. bribe senators and congressman. they are only in it for the money
